Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, a Palestinian who is reported to have joined the Jihad against the Israeli occupation of Palestine in the late 1960s is also said to have co-founded Al Qaeda in 1988 with Osama Bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and others. Commonly referred to as Father of Global Jihad, it has been documented that Azzam, a Sunni Islamic Scholar, Theologian and Member of the Muslim Brotherhood was a teacher and mentor to Osama Bin Laden and the one who persuaded Bin Laden to come to Afghanistan and help the Jihad there. Azzam was assassinated on November 24, 1989 in Peshawar, Pakistan, nine months after the end of the Soviet-Afghan War that lasted over nine years, from December 1979 to February 1989.   

“The Sudanese said, “I drove behind his car also going the wrong way. After about 100 meters, Abdullah Azzam’s car turned right to cross a ditch - an open sewer. There was a small bridge made of concrete slabs on top of the sewer. As soon as the car was on top of the bridge on the sewer, it exploded” Muhammad shared. He was recounting what a Sudanese Arab had told him before continuing his own story.    

“The Sudanese was crying as he said, “I saw Abdullah Azzam‟s body going up from the exploded car and landing on the front of his car. I screamed and looked at him””.   

“I didn’t live far away and I was preparing to leave my house for the Friday prayer as well when I heard a loud bang on my door” offered Muhammad.    

“It was the Sudanese friend who witnessed Abdullah Azzam’s assassination with two Arab friends. The minute I opened the door, they screamed “Abdullah Azzam was killed.” I did not know what to say from the shock of the news”.   

“All the Arabs started heading to Sayaf‟s camp at Pabi as there was a cemetery for Arab martyrs there. At the cemetery, there was no place to sit. More than 1,000 Arabs were standing. It was a shock to people and I saw and heard people screaming, “Allah O Akbar” (Allah is Greatest)” Muhammad disclosed.

THE SOVIET AFGHAN WAR

Although the Soviet-Afghan War that Mujahid Muhammad participated in occurred decades ago, some of the issues and mindsets that led to Mujahedin converging in Afghanistan persist unabated with Sudan now being one of several epicenters. Hence the importance of a story project solely devoted to acquiring knowledge about these issues and mindsets, understanding them and coming up with solutions to them.

SEGMENT TWO - FROM THE JIHAD IN AFGHANISTAN TO THE JIHAD IN SUDAN

Afghan Mujahedin considered it a victory when the Soviet combatant forces withdrew from Afghanistan beginning on May 15, 1988 and ending on February 15, 1989. They saw the defeat of a superpower like the Soviet Union that had invaded Afghanistan a Muslim country as a victory for Islam. After their perceived victory in Afghanistan, many Afghan Mujahedin became emboldened and considered it their duty to move to other countries where they believed Muslims required assistance in winning Jihad against the enemies of Islam. One such country was Sudan where Osama Bin Laden and other Mujahedin moved to in 1992. 

Northern Sudan’s Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan had its origins in 1821 when Mohammed Ali Pasha, the ruler of Egypt conquered the northern part of Sudan and ushered in the Turko-Egyptian period in the country. In 1839, he opened regular trade routes to Southern Sudan in search of ivory and slaves which accelerated the movement and entry of Northern Sudanese Arabs into Southern Sudan as soldiers and slave traders during the 1840s.

Following the entry of Northern Sudanese Arabs into Southern Sudan, a very troubled relationship developed between the two parts of Sudan as strict followers of the Koran in Northern Sudan advocated for the imposition of an Islamic state based on strict Shari’a. The troubled relationship between the predominantly Christian Southern Sudan and the predominantly Muslim Northern Sudan came to a peak when a liberation struggle was ignited in Southern Sudan on August 18, 1955 and a war ensued. Supporters of the entire Sudan as an Islamic state based on strict Shari’a proclaimed Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan in defense of Islam and waged a brutal war against them. Southern Sudanese Christians fought back. A brief hiatus in Northern Sudan’s Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan occurred in 1972 when an agreement was brokered and signed on February 27, 1972.

IDI AMIN DADA

Kinship supersedes religious affiliation in the Kakwa tribe and the adage “Blood is thicker than water” dictates most things. In other words, relationships and loyalties within family and kinship are the strongest and most important ones over relationships based on membership in a religious group. Consequently, Kakwa Muslims and Christians have always lived together peacefully. The family and kinship relationships are so close and warm that Chrislam, the amalgamation of Christianity and Islam became the norm, long before it was a buzz word around the globe.

A year before the signing of a decisive agreement to end the war in Sudan, Idi Amin Dada a moderate Muslim from the Kakwa tribe which traverses the present day African countries of Uganda, South Sudan and Congo became President of Uganda on January 25, 1971 through a coup d'état. He had been Commander in Chief of the Uganda Armed Forces before he took over the government in Uganda. Alleged to have been aided by the Israeli Mossad to ascend to the position of President of Uganda, Idi Amin Dada had aided the predominantly Christian Southern Sudanese Freedom Fighters in their fight against the chiefly Muslim Northern Sudanese despite he himself being a Muslim. He did this while serving as Commander in Chief of the Uganda Armed Forces because he considered the Southern Sudanese his kin.

“In February 1972, Dad summoned the Israeli Ambassador to Uganda and accused the Israelis of subversive activities. In future weeks, he would ask all Israeli citizens to leave Uganda” Jaffar disclosed of the time when the Honorific Hebrew title Reliable Helmsman (HAGAI NE’EMAN) which was given to Idi Amin Dada by Israel shattered.   

Four years and five months later, “OPERATION ENTEBBE” occurred on July 4, 1976 amid a lot of occurrences in the ISAAC-ISHMAEL CONFLICT. A counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) at Entebbe Airport in Uganda, East Africa, “OPERATION ENTEBBE” was part of the Arab-Israeli conflict and it resulted from a broken relationship between Idi Amin Dada and the very Israel that is said to have aided him in becoming President of Uganda on January 25, 1971. Sometimes known as “Raid on Entebbe and retroactively referred to as “OPERATION JONATHAN” in memory of the unit’s leader, Yonatan Netanyahu the older brother of Benjamin Netanyahu a popular Prime Minister of Israel, “OPERATION ENTEBBE” had the military code name “OPERATION THUNDERBOLT.” 

On the night of July 3, 1976 and the early morning of July 4, 1976, there was a “Raid” on Entebbe by the Israeli Elite Special Forces. They “raided” Entebbe to rescue fellow Israelis taken hostage by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) on Air France Flight 139 at Entebbe Airport in Uganda. The “Raid” has been dramatized in films such as Victory at Entebbe (1976) directed by Marvin J. Chomsky and Raid On Entebbe (1977) directed by Irvin Kershner, among others. Books on the “Raid” include William Stevenson’s Ninety Minutes at Entebbe and Yoni’s Last Battle: The Rescue at Entebbe by Iddo Netanyahu.    

Questions abound about whether Idi Amin Dada was unsuspectingly tricked into becoming involved in a fight that was not his. His story has been the subject of fictional movies that include the feature film titled “THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND” starring Forest Whitaker. However, the actual story provides a more truthful chronicle not the fictionalized versions. The accurate story will become crystal clear as the series “IDI AMIN: HERO OR VILLAIN? HIS SON JAFFAR AMIN AND OTHER PEOPLE SPEAK” unfolds, along with numerous other projects being implemented.

SEGMENT THREE - “THE ISAAC ISHMAEL CONFLICT: TELLING THE STORIES, CONNECTING THE DOTS” 

You will recall that a brief hiatus occurred in the Jihad declared by Northern Sudanese Jihadists against Christians in Southern Sudan when an agreement was brokered and signed on February 27, 1972. A year before, Idi Amin Dada a moderate Muslim from the Kakwa tribe which traverses the present day African countries of Uganda, South Sudan and Congo became President of Uganda on January 25, 1971 through a coup d'état allegedly orchestrated by Israel with whom Idi Amin Dada enjoyed a rock-solid relationship. Amin aided the predominantly Christian Southern Sudanese Freedom Fighters in their fight against the chiefly Muslim Northern Sudanese while serving as Commander in Chief of the Uganda Armed Forces because he considered the Southern Sudanese his kinsmen. However, by the same date of the signing of the agreement between Northern Sudan and Southern Sudan and the purported end of Northern Sudan’s Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan on February 27, 1972, the Arab World had used Idi Amin Dada’s religion as a Muslim to successfully snatch him away from Israel and Southern Sudanese Christians by default.     

Notice that this orchestrated break in relationship with Israel had also curiously occurred in February 1972 the month of the signing of the purported agreement to end Northern Sudan’s Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan. That time Amin summoned the Israeli Ambassador to Uganda, accused the Israelis of subversive activities and subsequently expelled all Israeli citizens from Uganda. 11 years later in 1983, four years after Idi Amin Dada had been overthrown as President of Uganda and granted asylum first in Libya and then in Saudi Arabia, the incumbent President of Sudan declared all Sudan an Islamic State under strict Shari’a including the predominantly Christian non-Islamic majority Southern Sudan. Jihadists and supporters of the entire Sudan as an Islamic state based on strict Shari’a again proclaimed a full Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan and continued to wage a brutal war against them because the Southern Sudanese Christians continued to fight back.

“The mosque was packed with people inside and outside. It was very hard to find a spot to sit but I managed to find a spot. I saw many familiar faces from Peshawar, Pakistan” continued Muhammad, the Afghan Mujahid who was visiting Khartoum, Sudan in 1995 where Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden and other Jihadists had relocated to following the end of the Soviet-Afghan War that lasted over nine years, from December 1979 to February 1989. He was talking about his time in Peshawar, Pakistan which was the hub of Afghan Mujahedin operations during their Soviet-Afghan Jihad against the combined forces of the Soviet backed Afghan government of the time and the Soviet Army.

“After the prayers, I also saw Mamdouh Mahmoud Salem, Abu Hajir, one of the co-founders of Al-Qaeda outside and he was surprised to see me. We greeted each other and Abu Hajir asked me what I was doing in Sudan. I told him that I was a guest of the Muwafaq Foundation.”   

Sudan is the immediate location for “THE ISAAC ISHMAEL CONFLICT: TELLING THE STORIES, CONNECTING THE DOTS STORY PROJECT” because it continues to be a Theatre of Operation for diehard Jihadists. They have continued to declare Jihad against Jews, Christians and other Muslims who do not condone their version of Jihad. These Muslims now include Muhammad who is in hiding because he fears for his life after speaking out against the Al-Qaeda version of Jihad, despite participating in the Afghan Jihad that lasted over nine years, from December 1979 to February 1989.      

“Al-Qaeda had a distorted interpretation of Islam” Muhammad divulged while describing the time he spent in Afghanistan before and after the United States of America invaded Afghanistan after the horrendous September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States of America.         

That time, lawless Arab Mujahedin funded by Osama Bin Laden called other Muslims Kafirs while wreaking mayhem in Afghanistan. They had taken control of Afghanistan and appointed themselves judge, jury and executioners of people they judged as infidels, including devoted Muslims like Muhammad and others.         

Sudan had been home to Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden and other Al-Qaeda members from 1992 to 1996 when Bin Laden was expelled, set up shop in Afghanistan and continued Jihad. However, he had already sowed the seeds of the Al-Qaeda version of Jihad in Sudan and emboldened Jihadists to continue their Jihad against Christians in Southern Sudan by funding them. The predominantly Christian Southern Sudanese Freedom Fighters put up a spirited fight against the Jihadists.

Osama Bin Laden willed his entire estate to Global Jihad and he accumulated a substantial portion of this wealth while residing in Sudan which unknown to many, Jihadists consider as one of several epicenters of a spiritual war to usher in a Worldwide Islamic Caliphate to which everyone on earth will be subordinate. Consequently, Islamists in Sudan continue Jihad against Jews, Christians and Muslims who do not condone or believe in their version of Jihad.   

Activities attributed to Jihadists in Sudan who are working tirelessly to collapse South Sudan so that it can return to the whole Sudan as an Islamic State under strict Shari’a are said to include a continuing pledge of loyalty to Osama Bin Laden and his vision for an Islamic Caliphate. Among the viewpoints endorsed by Al-Qaeda members and affiliates is the belief that a Christian-Jewish alliance is conspiring to destroy Islam and liberal Muslims are apostates deserving death. Consequently, Al-Qaeda and its affiliates are reported to have carried out many attacks on targets they consider Kafir including Mosques and Muslim gatherings which begs the question could Muhammad’s assertions about Osama Bin Laden be very much at play in spite of his being ushered into Paradise upon his death on May 2, 2011 as Jihadists believe?  

"In Islam or Jihad if a leader dies, it will not make any difference to the cause. When they announce that Osama Bin Laden is dead, Muslims, Al-Qaeda members and their supporters will not feel down. The cause will move with or without Osama Bin Laden” Muhammad had asserted while expanding on his epic life story as a Mujahid in Afghanistan.  

“Al-Qaeda is not just Osama Bin Laden.”   

“If Osama Bin Laden was dead they would not hide it as they will say that he went to Paradise and we should all follow his path”.

“If Osama Bin Laden dies, they will announce it believe me. Muslims will have more courage to follow his example and die like him for Islam. It will not make any difference at all as Zawahiri will take over”. 

“If all Al-Qaeda members in Pakistan die, the ones in Yemen, Algeria and other countries will continue with the sleeper cells. They will continue with business as usual”. 

“This is how Islam is. In Islam, from the beginning until now, all the leaders seek death like their soldiers. They never send an army and stay behind. When the leader gets killed, somebody will scream and say, "Let us all follow our leader and die fighting harder". Al-Qaeda has already organized their leadership system and they have been expecting Osama Bin Laden to die any minute. They are ready for it.” 

“The Egyptians are more aggressive than Osama Bin Laden and Zawahiri is already a respected name among Muslims who sympathize with Al-Qaeda”.
 

“Look at Islam as a system of life then you will understand Jihad. The death of a leader will not make a difference”.

SEGMENT FOUR - JIHAD CONTINUES AGAINST SOUTH SUDAN

Two years after the predominantly Christian Southern Sudan attained Independence from the chiefly Muslim Northern Sudan, war broke out in South Sudan and there are suggestions that Jihadists and strict followers of the Koran in Sudan and around the world are secretly financing lawless elements in South Sudan using billions of dollars they have at their disposal, to wreak havoc in South Sudan so that the country can collapse and go back to being one Sudan as an Islamic state based on a strict form of Shari’a. You will recall that Osama Bin Laden willed his entire estate to Global Jihad and he accumulated a substantial portion of this wealth while residing in Sudan. Unknown to many, Jihadists consider Sudan as one of several epicenters of a spiritual war to usher in a Worldwide Islamic Caliphate to which everyone on earth will be subordinate. Consequently, Islamists in Sudan continue Jihad against Jews, Christians and Muslims who do not condone or believe in their version of Jihad. 

The continuing Jihad in South Sudan which may go down in history as the most brutal Jihad of all times has now produced millions of destitute War Orphans who risk being abducted and forced to fight in the camouflaged ruthless Jihad as child soldiers!

“They took all the kids from the school and forced them all to join the war” offered a former child soldier from South Sudan we are calling Joseph. He was recalling his horrific ordeal after being kidnapped by prowling adult soldiers and forced to fight in the war between the predominantly Muslim Northern Sudan and largely Christian Southern Sudan as a child soldier, with Jihadists in Northern Sudan continuing to pronounce death on Jews, Christians, liberal Muslims like Muhammad and the ones who condone Chrislam.       

The marauding adult soldiers had come to Joseph’s High School, kidnapped all the children from the school and forced them to fight alongside the adults in the Jihad intended for establishing the whole Sudan as an Islamic state under a strict form of Shari’a. It was the second-time fate dealt Joseph a cruel blow because his father was killed during the same war between Southern Sudan and Northern Sudan  and Joseph became a War Orphan like many South Sudanese Children have now become because a war continues to rage there unabated.

Prowling and lawless adult soldiers target all children for abduction and force them to become killing machines around the world. However, War Orphans are particularly vulnerable because most of them have no one to protect them as war rages in parts of the world including Sudan where the concealed but vicious Jihad continues.  In other words, War Orphans are more exposed to forcible recruitment as child soldiers by heartless combatants.

“We have orphans who we rescued when the insecurity intensified. They are now residing in Internally Displaced Camps in South Sudan and Refugee Camps in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo with people who take care of them. Many of them either lost their parents while fleeing the war or the parents were killed while they were still in South Sudan” offered a Good Samaritan who has a heart for orphans as everyone should! 

Like the War Orphans, the Good Samaritans who are now taking care of the orphans are themselves struggling in poverty and now depend on other Good Samaritans to come through for them with financial contributions for the upkeep of the orphans and setting up additional orphanages to protect more War Orphans at risk of being abducted and forced to fight as child soldiers.
