“Can I call you back during my break? I have three International Flights leaving in a couple of hours” offered Charles Benea a Delta Airlines employee who is fiercely protective of war orphans because he was a war orphan himself. Benea had answered a phone call from me as he was getting ready to attend to Delta Airlines Flights scheduled to fly out of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport where he works. Seatac Airport as the Seattle area airport is commonly referred to is a very busy American Airport with thousands of airlines flying through there on a 24hour basis. Delta Airlines, Benea’s current employer is one of the world’s largest global airlines and greatly admired for its outstanding corporate responsibility and unrivaled commitment to employees which is why Benea is ecstatic about working for the airline. I was calling to obtain an update on Benea’s efforts to end the suffering of innocent South Sudanese children, women, the elderly and unarmed civilians caught in the crossfire of a war that continues unabated and threatens to obliterate South Sudan, the world’s newest country and Benea’s country of birth. It obtained Independence from Northern Sudan in 2011 and returned to war in December 2013 causing severe suffering.

Benea was a baby and only 29 days old when his father was killed in 1972 during a related decades long war between a predominantly Muslim Northern Sudan and a largely Christian Southern Sudan so he grew up as a War Orphan, experiencing first hand how harsh life is for War Orphans. Fate would deal him another cruel blow at the age of 15 when he was kidnapped by a group of prowling Southern Sudanese rebels fighting the government for control.

The soldiers had come to Benea's High School, kidnapped all the children from the school and forced them to fight alongside the adults as child soldiers. Benea was one of the children forced to fight with the rebels until he was rescued by a United Nations driver who found him struggling to walk after being shot in the leg during a fire fight between the rebel forces he fought alongside and the government forces they were opposing. The United Nations driver took the young Benea to Kenya and cared for him until he handed him over to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees officials.

Benea spent time at a Refugee Camp as a child refugee until the United States of America selected him to come to America for resettlement. He is grateful to the people of America and his sponsor for facilitating his coming to America and giving him the opportunity to become a full fledged American citizen. However, his heart aches for South Sudan’s War Orphans because he knows their harsh realities first hand and he is not alone.
“We have orphans who we rescued when the insecurity intensified. They are now residing in the refugee camps in Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo with people who take care of them. Many of them either lost their parents while fleeing the war or the parents were killed while they were still in South Sudan”. Those were the words of another person who is as fiercely protective of orphans as two civilians who were involved in rescuing many of the orphans from harm in South Sudan. The rescuers survived a murderous rampage by South Sudan government soldiers but sustained severe injuries. The orphans they rescued are now safe in a refugee camp in Uganda but two of the civilians who rescued the orphans are fighting for their lives. They need surgery costing at least $3,500.00 and they don’t have that kind of money. Like the war orphans, the two injured civilian rescuers are now depending on good Samaritans to come through for them with financial contributions. Without this financial assistance, they will lose their legs to amputation as the doctors are demanding payment before operating on the two civilians. Please consider contributing to their surgical expenses as well as the upkeep of the orphans, many of whom are being taken care of by other good Samaritans.
